Cyrill Ibrahim Features on Cover of Gentleman’s Journal

‘Instead, he fizzes with charisma — and there’s as much charm in that cordial smile as there is talent in those octave-spanning fingers’ – Gentleman’s Journal, number 37

Cyril Ibrahim was honoured to be featured on the front cover of the 37th Gentleman’s Journal edition in 2021, which celebrated the future of British music. He appeared alongside other exciting up-and-coming names, such as Xhosa Cole, Che Lingo, Zak Abel, Rhys Lewis, and Dan Owen – each of them celebrated for their contributions to music and lofty potential.

Cyril already has a rich history within the British music scene. He attended the Royal College of Music in London under a full scholarship and left with a Master of Performance Degree. The British-Dutch pianist then went on to play St John’s Smith Square – a major venue in London – while appearing on BBC Radio 3 as ‘Artist of the Week’ following the release of his debut album, Dialogue. Cyril even received an invite to play on one of the most quintessentially British TV shows around… The One Show.

However, Gentleman’s Journal didn’t purely pick Cyril out of the crowd for his talents across 88 keys, although they could have – they were inspired by his unique message for the next generation.

Cyril told them: “There’s a sense,” says the pianist, “that you must be well-educated to enjoy classical music. And that’s not true at all. That’s why I’m trying to find a new and more exciting approach. The job, is to inspire a new generation of people — who may not be connected to classical music. Because it isn’t for the elite. Really. It’s so, so human.

“This music helps us — it does something to our brains. But we need to find a new approach to classical music. Young people need to feel like they can be a part of it — because it’s really powerful when that happens. When that happens, it’s incredibly special. It enriches a life.”

These messages go hand-in-hand with Cyril’s education platform, The Classical Music Collective, which aims to reach new supporters and engagers from all over the world, driven by a shared love of music. Read the article here, on the Gentleman’s Journal website.
